Healthy Heart Sourcebook for Women

Basic Consumer Health Information about Cardiac Issues Specific to Women, Including Facts about Major Risk Factors and Prevention, Treatment and Control Strategies, and Important Dietary Issues

Along with a Special Section Regarding the Pros and Cons of Hormone Replacement Therapy and Its Impact on Heart Health, and Additional Help, Including recipes, a Glossary, and a Directory of Resources

Each year, about 370,000 women die of heart disease, making it the number one killer of American women. Some risk factors, such as age and heredity, cannot be controlled; but many others, including high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking, can be managed to help women maintain health.

Healthy Heart Sourcebook for Women alerts readers to be concerned about heart health and to take steps to prevent heart disease. A special section presents information about the hormone replacement therapy controversy as it relates to heart disease and breast cancer. Another part covers nutrition and dietary issues and presents sample recipes. A glossary and a directory of resources for additional help and information are also provided.

The book's 43 chapters are arranged in six major parts:

  • Introduction to Women and Heart Disease - discusses basic issues and presents statistics concerning women and heart disease
  • Major Risk Factors and Prevention - identifies risk factors and how they can be prevented through lifestyle choices
  • Treatment and Control Strategies - explains treatments and their probable outcomes for heart patients and their families
  • The Hormone Replacement Therapy Controversy - examines the pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy and its relation to heart disease in women
  • Dietary Issues and Cardiac Health - explains proper nutrition practices and dietary choices for maintaining a healthy heart, with sample recipes
  • Additional Help and Resources - includes a glossary, a directory of additional resources, and a section on Internet resources for patients and health professionals. All contact data has been fully verified and includes web site and e-mail addresses as available.
  • Completing the Sourcebook is a comprehensive index.

Material in this book has been collected from a wide range of government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and periodicals.

"Because of the lack of information specific to women on this topic, this book is recommended for public libraries and consumer libraries." - American Reference Books Annual, 2001

"A good reference source and recommended for all public, academic, medical, and hospital libraries." - Medical Reference Services Quarterly, Summer 2001
