Basic Consumer Health Information for Caregivers, Including a Profile of Caregivers, Caregiving Responsibilities, Tips for Specific Conditions, Care Environments, and the Effects of Caregiving, Along with Legal Issues, Financial Concerns, Future Planning, a Glossary, and a Listing of Additional Resources
Of the 12.8 million Americans estimated to need long-term care assistance, only about 2.4 million live in institutions. Family and friends help the majority of individuals requiring long-term care, while a much smaller number receive assistance from government programs.
Caregiving Sourcebook provides information to help caregivers and their families prepare and accomplish the variety of tasks involved in caregiving. Readers will learn essential information about caregiving responsibilities and options, care environments, tips for care of specific conditions or diseases, and the effects of caregiving on the caregiver. Other topics covered include planning for the future, financial concerns, and legal issues.
The book's 37 chapters are arranged in six major parts:
- Compassion in Action: A Look at Caregiving in America - profiles caregivers in the United States, describes the stages of caregiving, and examines the costs and impacts of caregiving
- Caregiving Responsibilities and Concerns - explains the day-to-day issues involved in caregiving, including activities of daily living, health care issues, creating safe environments, transportation needs, caregiver stress, future planning, and grief
- Caregiving for Specific Conditions and Diseases - covers caregiving for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, brain injuries, cancer, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and physical disabilities
- Care Environments - focuses on community services, respite care, hospice care, and the transition from home to residential care
- Legal and Financial Information - covers topics such as financial planning, advance directives, legal documents, insurance, and settlements
- Additional Help and Information - includes a glossary, a guide to federal resource programs, and a list of organizational resources
- Completing the book is a comprehensive index.
