Basic Consumer Health Information about the Benefits of Breastmilk, Preparing to Breastfeed, Breastfeeding as a Baby Grows, Nutrition, and More, Including Information on Special Situations and Concerns Such as Mastitis, Illness, Medications, Allergies, Multiple Births, Prematurity, Special Needs, and Adoption
Along with a Glossary and Resources for Additional Help and Information
Experts agree that breastmilk is the ideal nutrition for a healthy, full-term baby and is the only food needed for the first six months of life. Human milk contains at least 100 ingredients not found in infant formula, and even infant formula makers agree that breastmilk is best for babies. Nevertheless, only half of all babies in the United States are breastfed, and less than twenty percent are still breastfeeding by age six months.
This Sourcebook contains basic consumer health information about the benefits of breastmilk, the basics of breastmilk production, and tips on overcoming common challenges that breastfeeding families face. The book offers tips for breastfeeding babies, tells when and how to find support, and addresses special situations. A glossary and resources for additional help and information are also included.
The book's 64 chapters are arranged in eight major parts:
- Why Breastfeed? – explains the benefits of breastfeeding for babies, mothers, and the environment
- Preparing to Breastfeed – examines who breastfeeds, offers an overview of the breastfeeding process, and explains how human milk is produced, among other topics
- Breastfeeding in the Early Weeks – describes the roles of parents, doctors, and hospitals in the early weeks
- Breastfeeding as a Baby Grows – addresses common concerns of parents of breastfeeding babies
- Breastfeeding Difficulties – describes challenges that may arise and offers suggestions for overcoming them
- Breastfeeding and Returning to Work – addresses the special issues faced by mothers who return to work
- Special Situations – covers a wide range of special situations that affect breastfeeding
- Additional Help and Information - includes information about medication precautions, government initiatives, and legal issues, as well as a glossary of related terms and additional resources such as organizations, information, and products
- Completing the volume is a comprehensive index.
Material in this book has been collected from a wide range of government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and periodicals.
