Basic Consumer Health Information for Ethnic and Racial Minority Groups in the United States, Including General Health Indicators and Behaviors, Ethnic Diseases, Genetic Testing, the Impact of Chronic Diseases, Women's Health, Mental Health Issues, and Preventive Health Care Services
Along with a Glossary and a Listing of Additional Resources
In 1970, persons in racial and ethnic minority groups accounted for 16 percent of the population; by 1998, this proportion had increased to 27 percent, and it is expected to increase to nearly 50 percent by 2050. Recognition of the disparities in risk for chronic disease has become the foundation for current efforts to improve health care research, delivery, and education to racial and ethnic groups in the United States.
Ethnic Diseases Sourcebook provides health information about genetic and chronic diseases that affect ethnic and racial minorities in the United States. Readers will learn about diseases that are prevalent within ethnic and racial groups, the availability of genetic tests and counseling, and the impact of chronic diseases. Information about mental health services, women's health, and tips for improving health are also included, along with a glossary and a list of resources for additional help and information.
The book contains more than 50 non-technical articles arranged in eight parts:
- General Health of Ethnic and Racial Groups in the United States - provides an overview of health indicators and behaviors by race and ethnicity, including immunization rates, infant mortality rates, and more
- Diseases of Ethnicity - offers detailed information on specific inherited diseases prevalent within ethnic groups
- Genetic Testing - gives practical information on genetic counseling and testing
- The Impact of Chronic Diseases - reviews the effects of asthma, cancer, diabetes, hepatitis, AIDS, and other diseases within racial and ethnic groups

- Improving the Health of Ethnic and Racial Groups - examines access to health care and provides healthy recipes, among other subjects
- Additional Help and Information - includes a glossary, listings of minority resources, sources of health education materials, and genetic testing laboratories. All contact data in the "Additional Help and Information" section has been fully verified and includes web site and e-mail addresses as available.
- A comprehensive index completes the book.
Material in this book has been collected from a wide range of government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and periodicals.
