Our lungs are responsible for the essential natural function that gets oxygen into the bloodstream so that it can be delivered to the cells of our body. Breathing for most of us is something we do without being aware of it. Sometimes the normal lung defenses and barriers in the lungs do not work as well as they should. Medical problems at birth or during infancy and growth can affect lung development. Later in life the lungs may be damaged by smoking, occupational exposures, or accidents. These abnormalities allow air pollutants to break through the lung’s defenses, resulting in respiratory problems or diseases.
Lung Disorders Sourcebook offers information about specific types of lung disorders, including diagnosis, treatment, and prevention issues. The book offers advice for preventing some types lung disorder that are acquired by asbestos, radon, and other environmental exposures. Explanations of the medical tests used to diagnose lung disorders are included, along with information on the proper use of nebulizers, inhalers, and the medicines used to treat lung disorders. - Treatment – provide facts about different treatments, including medications, inhalers, oxygen therapy, and surgical procedures
- Risks and Prevention – analyzes environmental and behavioral risks, including smoking, air pollution, and occupational hazards, along with tips on preventing lung disorders
- Additional Help and Information - includes a glossary of related terms and directories of resources for additional information
- Completing the volume is a comprehensive index.
