Injury and Trauma Sourcebook

Basic Consumer Health Information about the Impact of Injury, the Diagnosis and Treatment of Common and Traumatic Injuries, Emergency Care, and Specific Injuries Related to Home, Community, Workplace, Transportation, and Recreation

Along with Guidelines for Injury Prevention, a Glossary, and a Directory of Additional Resources

Throughout history, injury has been a major cause of premature death. In modern America, injury takes a high toll and is the leading killer of our children, teenagers, and young adults. Yearly, almost 150,000 Americans die because of injuries. Of these, nearly 19,000 are children and teenagers. In addition, eight to nine million individuals suffer disabling injuries, with more than 300,000 of them suffering permanent disabilities.

This Sourcebook provides health information about common injuries and trauma injuries in the United States. Readers will learn essential information about injuries that occur at home, in the community, at work, and during transportation and recreation, as well as facts about emergency care. Injury prevention guidelines are included along with a glossary and a listing of additional resources.

The book's 63 chapters are organized in nine parts:

  • The High Toll of Injury in the U.S. - provides an overview of injury as a public health issue
  • Common Injuries - reviews bites and stings, burns, cuts and abrasions, and fractures, along with specific injuries to different parts of the body
  • Trauma Injuries - covers the physical and psychological aspects of trauma injuries
  • Emergency Care - describes how to handle severe and life-threatening injuries, what to expect in the emergency room, and similar topics
  • Injury Prevention Strategies for the Community and Home - gives practical advice for creating safe homes and communities
  • Work-Related Injuries - includes statistical data on specific occupations and workplace factors, along with safety guidelines and information on workplace violence
  • Transportation Injuries and Safety - reviews crash-related statistics and provides safety recommendations
  • Recreation-Related Injuries and Prevention - examines the risks of injury associated with common leisure activities
  • Additional Help and Information - includes a glossary of terms, a directory of resources, and a list of injury-related web sites
  • Completing the book is a comprehensive index.

Material in this volumes has been collected from a wide range of government agencies, professional associations, periodicals, and other sources.
