Hepatitis is a disorder in which viruses or other mechanisms produce inflammation in liver cells, resulting in liver injury or destruction. It can vary in severity from a minor illness with complete recovery to a life-threatening or lifelong disease. Hepatitis has many different causes. It is most commonly caused by specific viruses, transmitted by exposure to contaminated food or water or through contact with infected blood products, that cause the immune system to react to fight off infection. Hepatitis can also result from an autoimmune condition, or from medical problems, drugs, alcoholism, chemicals, and environmental toxins.
Hepatitis Sourcebook provides basic consumer health information about hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and other types of hepatitis, including autoimmune hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and toxin-induced hepatitis. It gives the facts about risk factors, prevention, transmission, screening and diagnostic methods, treatment options, and current research initiatives. Tips for coping with chronic hepatitis and a glossary and resources for additional help and information are also included.
