Adolescent Health Sourcebook

Basic Consumer Health Information about the Physical, Mental, and Emotional Growth and Development of Adolescents, Including Medical Care, Nutritional and Physical Activity Requirements, Puberty, Sexual Activity, Acne, Tanning, Body Piercing, Common Physical Illnesses and Disorders, Eating Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Depression, Bullying, Hazing, and Adolescent Injuries Related to Sports, Driving, and Work

Along with Substance Abuse Information about Nicotine, Alcohol, and Drug Use, a Glossary, and Directory of Additional Resources

Adolescence is a time of significant physical, mental, and emotional development which challenges teens and parents. Food, friends, and fun each provide opportunity for experimentation and risky behavior. An annual survey of U.S. youth shows that more than 9 million are overweight, a number that has tripled since 1980. This increase makes adolescents vulnerable to chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension previously associated more with adults. Underage drinking is also prevalent with nearly half of eighth graders and more than three-fourths of twelfth graders having tried alcohol. Underage drinking has been linked to increased learning problems, injuries, risky sexual activity, violence, and death. The guidance given and choices made during adolescence set the course for health and well-being in adulthood.

Adolescent Health Sourcebook, Second Edition provides basic information about the growth and development of adolescents and issues which impact them as they move from childhood, through puberty, to adulthood. It offers nutrition, physical activity, and weight management guidelines and discusses issues related to skin, reproduction, injury and other physical disorders and illness that affect teens. Adolescent concerns including bullying, online abuse, dating violence, drug and tobacco abuse, and mental health problems and disorders are included along with survival tips and guidance for parents, a glossary, and a directory of other resources.

What reviewers are saying . . .

"The writing is clear and straightforward, with black-and-white charts, graphs, and the occasional diagram interspersed. The obesity crisis among U.S. youth is addressed in depth, and current research on teenage brain development and mental illness makes this a particularly good resource for both parents and teens....An easy volume to browse." - School Library Journal, June 2007
