In 1971 there were two million cancer survivors living in the United States. Today, their number has increased to more than 10 million—a number made possible through better and earlier detection of cancer, advances in medical technologies, and improved treatments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one out of every six people over the age of 65 is a cancer survivor.
Statistics also suggest that approximately 65% of people diagnosed with cancer will live at least five years after their diagnosis, and nearly 75% of those with childhood cancer will live at least ten years.
Cancer survivorship presents multiple challenges, however. Cancer survivors often lack the information they need to make treatment choices, maintain optimal physical and mental health during and after treatment, prevent disability and late-effects associated with cancer, and handle economic issues related to cancer care.
Cancer Survivorship Sourcebook provides information for cancer patients and their family members, friends, and caregivers. It supplements the basic cancer information found in Omnigraphics' Cancer Sourcebook by discussing concerns encountered throughout the entire continuum of cancer care. It includes tips for researching specific types of cancer, treatment advances, and clinical trials, and it offers suggestions for coping with the side effects and complications of cancer treatments. Facts about emotional, cognitive, and mental health issues in cancer care are included, and a special section focuses on the challenges of maintaining wellness during and after cancer treatment.
Information for caregivers, friends, and family members of cancer patients is also provided, along with a glossary of cancer care terms, a directory of resources for cancer patients, and information about financial assistance for cancer care.
