Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders Sourcebook

Basic Consumer Health Information about Autism Spectrum and Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Such as Classical Autism, Asperger Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Including Information about Related Genetic Disorders and Medical Problems and Facts about Causes, Screening Methods, Diagnostic Criteria, Treatments and Interventions, and Family and Education Issues

Along with a Glossary of Related Terms, Tips for Evaluating the Validity of Health Claims, and a Directory of Resources for Additional Help and Information

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, autism and pervasive developmental disorders—developmental disabilities characterized by difficulties with social interactions, impairment in verbal or nonverbal communication, and the development of repetitive, unusual, or highly specialized interests—affect as many as 1 in 500 people in the United States. Little is known about the causes of these debilitating disorders, however, and there is much disagreement among medical authorities regarding diagnostic and treatment methods and even the distinction between the different types of disorders. Although a wide variety of treatment methods are available, their efficacy varies widely between individuals, and no cure exists.

Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders Sourcebook, First Edition, describes the current diagnostic criteria distinguishing the different types of pervasive developmental disorders, explains what is known about their causes, and provides information about screening and diagnostic methods and current treatments and interventions, including guidelines for evaluating their safety and effectiveness. Information about coping with common family and lifestyle issues, navigating the educational system, and facing independence is also provided. The book concludes with a glossary of related terms and a directory of resources for further help and information.
