Including Facts About Types Of Abuse And Violence, Warning Signs Of Abusive And Violent Behavior, Health Concerns Of Victims, Getting Help, And Staying Safe
Many teens today are concerned about youth violence—with good reason. In 2003, 5,570 young people between the ages of 10 and 24 were murdered. Eighty two percent of these victims were killed with a firearm. In 2004, more than 750,000 young people were treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained as a result of violence. Although media coverage most often focuses on mass shootings, youth violence shows itself in many forms, including bullying, physical fighting, hazing, suicide, and teen dating violence. Teens may also experience abuse such as sexual abuse, sibling abuse, and domestic violence. These types of experiences can leave physical and emotional scars that may remain with the victim for a very long time.
Abuse And Violence Information For Teens describes different types of abuse and provides information about the kinds of violence teens may experience. It discusses the warning signs of youth violence and what factors may contribute to youth violence. Since there are physical and emotional consequences resulting from abuse and violence, information is provided on seeking medical care and mental health services. A section on prevention and safety suggests ways teens can help prevent teen violence and how to keep themselves safe. The book also provides information on victims' legal rights. Resource directories include where victims of abuse and violence can go for help and how and where to report child abuse.
