Eye Care Sourcebook

Basic Consumer Health Information about Eye Care and Eye Disorders, Including Facts about the Diagnosis, Prevention, and Treatment of Refractive Disorders, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, and Problems Affecting the Cornea, Retina, and Lacrimal Glands

Along with Advice about Preventing Eye Injuries and Tips for Living with Low Vision or Blindness, a Glossary of Related Terms, and Directories of Resources for More Help and Information

The National Eye Institute estimates that nearly 14 million children and adults—about 6% of the population—are unable to see clearly due to ophthalmological disorders and diseases. According to vision care researchers, the problem is expected to worsen as the American population ages and the prevalence of low vision and blindness caused by macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and other common eye diseases increases. Although these eye diseases can be linked to loss of independence and a reduced quality of life, there is hope. Research has shown that regular eye examinations, timely diagnoses, appropriate treatment, and lifestyle changes can correct, prevent, delay, and even cure many vision problems.

Eye Care Sourcebook, Third Edition provides information on the function and structures of the eye, and it describes the prevalence of vision impairment and blindness in the United States. The Sourcebook also includes information on corrective therapies and procedures for refractive errors, including contact lenses, eyeglasses, and surgeries. In addition, it details the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, corneal and retinal problems, and eye infections. Information about disorders with eye-related complications, such as allergies and diabetic retinopathy, is also included, along with tips on preventing eye injuries, suggestions for people recently diagnosed with vision impairment or blindness, a glossary of terms, and resources for additional help and information.
