The U.S. Department of Education reports that as many as one out of every five Americans has a learning disability. Learning disabilities make it difficult to learn to
read, write, listen, speak, reason, or do math. They occur because of problems in how the brain receives and processes information. Early intervention services help many children avoid the stigma of failure; however, identifying learning disabilities can be difficult. While there is no cure for learning disabilities, research has identified effective learning strategies. In fact, with help, most children and adults with learning disabilities are able to accomplish their educational and career goals.
Learning Disabilities Sourcebook, Third Edition provides updated information about specific learning disabilities and other conditions that make learning difficult. These include dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, auditory and visual processing, communication disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, hearing and visual impairments, and brain injury. Current research on brain processes and function is described, along with facts about evidence-based therapy, instructional strategies, and federal education laws. Tips for building social skills and family relationships, making transitions from school to work, and dealing with financial issues are also provided, along with a glossary of related terms and directories of additional resources.
